One way to make a twinead J-pole with greater mechanical strength is to slip
the sucker inside a 6 ft piece of of PVC pipe and seal the ends.

To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Hi all.
I am looking for a program (MSDOS based) to permit computer control
of my NRD-525. I have two at present which I am playing with -
Spectrum 525 and NRDGUI.EXE (which I got from Hamnet on CI$).
Does anyone have any observations on the above two programs?
(Particularly on NRDGUI which has now documentation whatsoever.)
Anyone have any first hand experience of these or any other programs
either free, shareware or commercial?
I use Communications Manager on my Icom R-7000 and, ideally, the
program for my 525 would offer similar features; scanning, memory
management, the ability to produce graphic displays of frquency
utilization.....
(Communications Manager, by the way, is a very good package!)
Please Email me directly if possible (this way there's less
chance of my missing a message) and I will happily summarize
for the group.
Thanks,
Lee

John,
Tried to e-mail you but it bounced. Both Harris and Ten-Tec make
channelized HF commercial gear. You might try both of them, although
you might not like the price. Ten-Tec's number is in the adds in both
QST and CQ. If you can't run down a number for Harris, try ARRL HQ.
They used Harris gear in the recent W1AW upgrade and they may be able
to give you a pointer.

The FACT of the matter is that *neither* the Butternut nor the R-5 is anywhere
near a free-space half-wave (33 feet) on 20 meters, but the Butternut is
actually physically longer than the R5 by a good 5 feet.
As I already pointed out, making it an electrical half wave is a suboptimal mode
of operation if you can afford to have radials. If you can't, the R5 is better
than a Butternut w/o radials.

You're talking about the "CMOS Superkeyer II", no? I recently was looking
through the Nov '89 issue of QST, which had a construction article for
the "CMOS Superkeyer". One of its deficiencies noted in the article was
how it, when powered-on, would sometimes come up generating dits [I believe],
due to the fact that the logic would come up in a random state upon power-up.
I thought to myself and ask you guys: "Haven't you ever heard of a power-on
reset? A power-on reset has been a standard feature [um, one part of a
chip, one capacitor and one resistor, if I remember correctly - cheap] in
homebrew computer circuits since the mid 1970s.

Unfortunately, I haven't done the mods myself. I bought the unit used
from a fellow ham.
Anyway, the RX coverage is controlled by the initialization diode
matrix - and the schematics show some configurations.
I asked the guy who performed the act with them tiny chip diodes.. he
said that he had some modification instructions - but they did not
work. He ended up trying a few combinations.. and found one that
worked.
This leads me thinking that maybe he didn't found the perfect one yet.
The TX supposedly needs some other work as well.
I shall be left waiting for your version..

To the gentleman asking questions about PICCOLO equipment -
I have never seen any PICCOLO hardware of either first or later
generations appearing on the market. The British Diplomatic Wireless
Service did use it, but I think they upgraded to another mode during
the late 70's. (I vivdly remember a demo of PICCOLO I attended in the
late 60's...of course, you shoulda seen the analog hardware they had
to use...)
HOWEVER - the same guy that designs the Universal M-600/800/1000/7000
is still considering building a PICCOLO add on unit that will work
from the M-7000's accessory connector. If you're interested, give Fred
Osterman at Universal Radio a call (he's a good guy, not only does he
sell gear, he loves the hobby too!) and tell him that you want to add
your vote t6o PICCOLO add-ons and to pass it on to the guy in Florida
who's the daddy of this hardware!
If enough of us do this, perhaps they'll definitely start producing once
it's clear that they can at least break even on the darn thing...

Unfortunately, one of the ways that RS salespeople are evaluated is
by percentage of names and addresses obtained. If you refuse to give
your address, the guy might get mad because it will be a "black mark"
on his numbers.
However, let me reiterate that the official Tandy policy is that your
address is NOT required for ANY transaction. (except maybe for
repairs)
Tandy's good ol' boys in Ft. Worth feel that the mailout flyer helps
keep Radio Shack in business. I wonder if they know how much they
offend people when their employees are rude about getting the name
and address. Radio Shack is the only store I know of that does this.
If the flyers were so important, then everyone would be doing the same
thing. I wish RS would do a study on this aspect of their business.

btw, a friend who used to work for Radio Shack mentioned something
about a junk mail generator computer that compares your street address
and zip code to verify the address (and also to obtain a 9 digit zip).
Thus, if you like to give them fake addresses so they can waste money
sending out flyers to non-existant people (as I do), be sure to pick
a real street and use the proper zip code for that street, or the
junk mail may never get mailed.
Of course, this makes one wonder if junk mail could be avoided simply
by giving a bad zip code. Somehow, I bet not.

Yeah, I bought the 2 meter HT amplifier for $20.00. I thought that it
would be such a deal ... 2 watts in and 25 watts out. Ah, but there's
a catch. You also needed the RF-Operated T/R switch, which of course
the "Q" was out of stock on. I didn't find out about that until after I
bought it an opened the package. I also wonder what I'm going to do for a
heat sink ...
I thought that the FM stereo transmitter was pretty intriguing, but I
wonder what else I need for that kit.

The money I spent on the 735 was the best I've ever spent. The $400 I
plunked down for the AT-100 automatic tuner was the WORST.
Perhaps I didn't understand the product. I hoped that the thing would
automatically tune anything to any band. Perhaps I should have bought
the AH-2. (Are they still making the AH-2???)
The AT-100 is really an automatic antenna switch with a limited tuner
built-in.
